Age 82, of South Park, PA, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2018. He is survived by his wife Linda; children Roslyn (James) Whiteside, Joseph Anthony (Lori) Hedderman, Lia (Michael) Cook, David (Carol) Hedderman; stepchildren Melissa (Joel) Scullion, Amy Prater, Kevin (Laura) Brown, Heather (Nicholas) Brown-Downing; and sister Dolores Sciullo. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Wanda Hedderman, and brother Leo Hedderman. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a pioneer in the martial arts, beginning his training in jiu-jitsu in 1950 under Sensei Dewey Deavers. He continued Deaver's legacy as the head of the style by continuing to teach and develop Koseido-Ryu jiu-jitsu. He also studied karate while serving in the U.S. Army and in 1959 became the first person in Pittsburgh area to teach karate-do. In 1972 he joined the United State Chito-Ryu Karate Federation and was a senior member and valued instructor. At the age of 51, Hedderman was the oldest member of the U.S. Chito-Ryu Karate Federation to compete in the 1986 Soke Cup held in Kumamoto, Japan. In 2001, as a member of the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai, he demonstrated his jiu-jitsu style at their headquarters in Kyoto, Japan. He achieved the ranks of 9th degree black belt in karate and 10th degree black belt in jiu-jitsu. Outside of the martial arts, he was an electrician with IBEW Local 5 and retired from Franklin Electric in 1997. He enjoyed studying Catholic theology, fishing and traveling; especially throughout the American Southwest. Family and Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 PM, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 3-4, at the JEFFERSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, INC., 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pittsburgh, 15236. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, April 5, at Nativity Church, South Park. As a veteran of the U.S. Army, he will be buried with military honors at Jefferson Memorial Park, 401 Curry Hollow Road Pittsburgh PA 15236. Condolences may be left at www.jeffersonmemorial.biz.
