John Wesley Federkeil's Obituary
John Wesley Federkeil, age 91, of West Mifflin, passed away peacefully at home on March 17, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
One of eight children born to the late Aimee Louise (Fleck) and Andrew Roy Federkeil of West Deer Township. He was the beloved husband of Janet for 67 years, loving father of Susan (Robert) Dimsa of Jefferson Hills, Holly (Michael) Galioto of West Mifflin and the late Andrew Federkeil (Jean) of Sykesville, Maryland. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and will be missed by them including Jake and Nicole (Myles) Federkeil, Cody (Taylor), Zachary, Jesse, and Haley Galioto and his first great grandchild, Wesley Galioto on the way. Adopted Pap to Adriane Slater, Piper McFarland and Nicholas Horgan. He was a true testament to faith, love, and family.
John grew up on the family farm and graduated from Connelly Trade School in Pittsburgh in 1950 and went on to serve in the U.S. Army in Korea. While there, he was reassigned to the Scarwaf unit, a special branch of the Army attached to the Air Force. Following his discharge, he was employed by Westinghouse Bettis Site where he retired after 39 years. During his time at Westinghouse, he was proud to have helped build the first nuclear reactor for the Historic U.S.S. Nautilus. He was a member of Lebanon Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder/Trustee. Following his retirement, he spent many days helping with the maintenance of the church. John was a lifetime member of VFW Post #914. He loved to travel, once captaining his own boat from Pittsburgh to the Mississippi River to New Orleans and driving his own van to Alaska. He felt a sense of civic duty, by adopting a corner lot near his home and kept it mowed and litter free for many years. John was a character - a quick wit. Always spreading happiness and joy in living, and his beautiful blue eyes sparkled like a bright blue sky.
He was preceded in death by sisters Marion Duderstadt, Mary Grau, Aimee Park, Esther McCreary and brothers Andrew, Eugene and Richard.
