My fondest memory of act of kindness was my first trip to Pittsburgh, PA. I am a distant relative and have heard so many stories of the Pittsburgh way, Roberto Clemente, Babe Ruth last home run, Pirates, Steelers, Penguins, Johnny Unitas, steel mills, and hard work growing up from my grandfather; Hal.
In college, my GF and I decided to visit New York and Washington DC. My grandfather had passed; my mom said go visit the relatives in Pittsburgh! I had heard so many positive things from my family about the “town” growing up…
My GF and I made the trip to Pittsburgh from DC (spur of the moment) and happened to be a weekend and a family wedding. I was so worried about showing up (I had no formal attire).
Jackie was genuine, unselfish,, and kind to me. I was given a tie to wear, made it thru the wedding, treated like family; it was the funnest wedding I have ever been too. I learned the Irish catholic way that day- nothing like it.
I learned about “Eat N Park”, “Daaan taaan”, the pirates game, and the joys of “simple life”, the day to day from happy people.A much different perspective than California upbringing.
She made me feel welcomed, accepted, and grateful for the moment.
Over the years I made more trips to Pittsburgh to learn about my families deep roots. She opened her home, cooked, made me laugh, and reminded me of my grandma.
The experiences I have had have always had Jackie at the center. She had me educated on Pittsburgh traffic times, places to go, things to do, and memorable places in Pittsburgh.
Aunt Jackie was a wonderful soul and human being. Her kindness every trip was one of a kind in life. She told me stories of the basement with the family and the Steeler games; which I was privileged to stay in on my visit.
I am blessed to have met her. I learned gratitude, hospitality, and above all; kindness.
There is nothing like Pittsburgh people (family). After all the stories over the years I saw it.
Rest in peace Jackie.
Love,
Brian from CA
