The Kern family met the Melzers in the early 1960s when we moved to Bethel Park. Eleanor and my mother, Wilma Kern, became fast friends and kindred spirits. The kids were the same age; Andy and I grew up and became Eagle Scouts together. Our fathers were adult leaders in BS Troop 228 together. Eleanor was always like a second mother to me and my brother. The funny stories or life situations she and my mother shared are too numerous to recount here. Let's just say neither woman suffered fools, hypocrites or self-important people well. Both new the meaning of hard work, self-respect and the respect for others. She embraced my wife Donna as one of her own. Eleanor will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Steve Kern
