Helbig Family,
I am so very sorry for the loss of your beloved Ed. Growing up as cousins I remember sharing many happy family celebrations together over the years. Ed leaves a wonderful legacy and will be greatly missed.
May God comfort you and give you his peace. With my deepest sympathy,
Marie ( Zettl) Marshall
Ed's passing means so much to this community. His fellow teachers also morn is loss. He was dedicated to his students, and continuation of the sports he loved and most of all to his family. May God give peace and comfort his family .
Helbig family,
I remember meeting Ed through my husband when we lived on Judith Drive. They were on the same softball team for many years. Ed hosted many end-of-the-season softball parties at his home. We enjoyed each one of them. Many years later our paths crossed again when my boys ran cross country. Ed always cheered for them and greeted us with hugs, and conversation. He truly was a man who loved everyone and lived his best life every day. We are grateful to have known him. God Bless you all, Hollie, Daniel, Lucas, Ryan and Nathaniel Pajak
Ran track with Ed three years at BHS. He is and always was a man of honor and distinction. His influence carries on through the legacy of all who knew him. God’s blessings to his family and loved ones.
My daughter was on the track team at CV. We always said Baldwin and CV had the best track coaches in PA. Both school teams got together several times for benefit runs. He pored his heart and soul into everything he did. God Speed
I had the pleasure and honor of covering high school T&F and XC all across Pennsylvania through PennTrackXC, a website I founded in 1997. It soon became a full-time endeavor that afforded me the privilege to visit virtually every corner of the state. At the time, websites were unheard of in high school XC. We often had to stand in line behind a newspaper sportswriter to get an interview. But Ed knew that anyone who loved the sport was important to his team and his kids. And therefore to him. Ed went out of his way to make sure they received the attention they deserved. At any meet you get to observe the best in people. Ed was one who showed who he was at every turn. First and foremost, respecting and listening to kids, whether they ran for Baldwin or a competitor. Win or lose. First place or last. And it was always with a kind voice and a smile. He brought out the best in everyone.
We had a condo in the same complex as Ed and Lynne. They were always so kind, especially to our granddaughter, Laila. We loved chatting with them by the pool, and Ed, always the teacher, enjoyed helping Laila build her swimming skills. Ed was very much a cherished part of our community, and we'll certainly miss him.
Chuck, Andrea, and Laila
I feel fortunate to only know Ed as on of the track coaches, but to share that experience with him as I coached. He remembered me on site and was interested in the progress of my own daughter who ran high school XC and Track.
Ed gave so much to athletes and students alike. The WPIAL will not be the same without him.
Thanks for being a great coach!
Mr. Helbig was one of my favorite teachers when I attended high school in the Baldwin School District. He was always smiling, never acted rush when I needed to ask a question and I could tell he loved teaching and impacting young people. His mustache was always epic! I learned so much from him and he taught with the energy of a man called to his profession. I graduated with his sister, Marybeth, and she was a very special person. My prayers and condolences to the whole family as you traverse this journey of grief. Hold on to those special memories and remember that smile!
With sympathy,
