Jefferson Memorial is Now an Officially Accredited Arboretum!

The celebration of Arbor Day began in the late 1800s to raise awareness of the importance of planting trees. Trees play a vital role in our planet by providing food, shade, and life. It makes perfect sense that Jefferson Memorial Park has reached arboretum status, given the wide variety of native trees and shrubs that thrive here.

Founded in 1929 by Harry Campbell Neel, a Yale University graduate with a master’s degree in forestry, Jefferson Memorial Cemetery was designed as a park. Neel’s vision included lawn gardens that follow the land’s natural contours, enhanced by plants and statues. Today, the park spans over 170 developed acres and boasts more than 5,000 trees and shrubs.

Jefferson Memorial is committed to changing how cemeteries are viewed by future generations. Now officially accredited as an arboretum, we aim to engage the community further. With over 30 native plant species, Jefferson Memorial is a valuable resource for schools and horticulturists who visit to study our diverse plant life.

To be accredited, an arboretum must have at least 25 plant species—we exceed that with pride. We invite you to explore our beautiful grounds, whether for a peaceful walk through the hilly, tree-covered paths or to learn more about our wildlife, history, and artwork. Be sure to stop by the main office to pick up a copy of our Visitor’s Guide.

The owners and staff are dedicated to preserving the serene beauty of Jefferson Memorial for generations to come. Come visit and see the diverse plant specimens we proudly care for!
