Walter Soroka's Obituary
Walter Soroka
February 9, 1921 - January 1, 2019
Walter Soroka passed away peacefully on January 1 at the age of 97 at The Pines of Mt. Lebanon.
Walter was born one of five brothers, sons of Ukranian immigrants, on the Southside. He spent his early years in Mt. Oliver and was a 1938 graduate of Brentwood High School.
He raised his family in Baldwin and spent his retirement years on Siesta Key Beach in Sarasota, Florida.
As a member of the Greatest Generation, he served in World War II as a proud member of the 267th Coast Artillery Battalion, primarily stationed in Alaska. He was one of the last surviving veterans of that courageous unit.
After the War, he founded Soroka Sales, Inc. on the Southside, where he was able to employ many loyal and dedicated employees who knew and respected him.
Walter was preceded in death in 1993 by his loving wife of 52 years, Elmira Dorothy Soroka. Wanting to express and share his love for her, he commissioned and dedicated the stained glass window in the chapel of Jefferson Memorial Mausoleum, depicting the signing of the United States Constitution.
He is survived by his sons Richard D. and Walter C. Soroka (Catherine) and the true love of his life, his grandson Bradley T. Soroka (Meagan) and for the past year has been blessed as the great-grandfather of Tyler D. Soroka.
Visitation will be Thursday from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home. Memorial service will be Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Jefferson Memorial Mausoleum Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Smithfield United Church, 620 Smithfield Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222. Condolences may be left at www.jeffersonmemorial.biz.
