Veronica B. Mattson (Wharton)'s Obituary
Veronica B. (Wharton) Mattson died peacefully at home surrounded by family on November 4, 2018. Veronica was born in Philadelphia on December 28, 1964 to John and Peggy Wharton. She graduated from Carlisle High School and attended The Pennsylvania State University where she earned a BS in Biology along with her teaching certification. Veronica later obtained her MS from Kent State University. Veronica met her husband and best friend, David C. Mattson, during her first week at Penn State in 1982. They became inseparable and married in August 1990. During their 36 years together they enjoyed everything Penn State, traveling around the world and getting together with their friends as often as they could. Veronica taught science class for 28 years at West Mifflin Senior High School. She had a positive impact on the lives of her students and also the lives of her friends she taught with through all of the years. Veronica is survived by her husband Dave, her parents John & Peggy Wharton, brother John "PJ" Wharton and his wife Amy (Kearful) and their sons John VI, Benjamin and Peter, maternal aunts Robin Elrick and Jackie Elrick, paternal uncle Richard "Corky" Wharton and his wife Joyce (Hill). Dave's family includes his parents Dolores and Fred (Dec.) Mattson, his brother Eric Mattson and his wife Jamie (Zabelsky), his sister Elaine Spicuzza and her husband Chuck, his niece Kathy Kotuce and her children Ryan and McLaine Dwyer, his niece Heather Kotuce (Dec.), and his nephew Robert Spicuzza. The family would like to thank everyone who helped during the last 17 months with friendship, companionship, transportation, food and especially all of the cards and gifts she received. Veronica read or heard every thought that was sent her way. Veronica cared deeply about her family, her friends, her co-workers and her students. A gathering to celebrate her life is being planned and details will be provided when they are finalized.
