Velma Margaret Holohan's Obituary
Age 81, of Pleasant Hills, Vel died on Apr. 24, 2022. She was the beloved wife of John F. "Jack" Holohan, Jr. for 42 years; the proud mother of Michael (Marianne) Holohan; and loving grandmother of Finn and Violet. She was the daughter of Michael Kozar and Caroline (Gibala) Kozar and sister of Thomas Kozar who preceded her in death.
Vel was born in Moon Township where she graduated from Moon High School before enrolling at Indiana University of Pennsylvania to study history and education. Her education was interrupted when her father became ill and the family needed her at home. She then worked as a secretary for the Alcoa Corporation in Pittsburgh. After marrying Jack, she made their home into a neighborhood social hub, hosting Easter egg hunts and Super Bowl Parties. Her devotion to the Steelers was strong even by Pittsburgh standards, and she would sometimes throw a plush Bad Call Brick at the TV to protest bad refs. She expressed her ardent faith in Jesus through study, service, and leadership. She served as a deacon, played bells in the choir, joined the Women's Association, cared for people through the Stephen Ministry, served free meals, and facilitated a weekly Bible study. Her love of learning, reading, and teaching came together in her role as co-leader of the Summer Reading Camp at her church. She made the best grilled cheese sandwiches, according to her grandchildren, who will not allow another's grilled cheese to touch their lips. "She was a sweet, thoughtful, nice grandma," said nine-year-old Finn.
