Theresa Corso's Obituary
Theresa (Stezoski) Corso passed away peacefully at home in Alexandria, Virginia on October 9, 2021, at the age of 93. She was born on March 8, 1928, and raised in Homestead, Pennsylvania. Formerly a resident of West Mifflin and Jefferson Hills, Theresa was an active parishioner of St. Thomas A’ Becket Church.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, Thomas Corso, her parents, Albert and Amelia Stezoski, her sisters, Ann (Stezoski) Swisher and Mary Catherine Stezoski, and brothers, Walter, Joseph, Theodore, and William, and granddaughter, Emily Shoup. She was the loving mother of Alan (Cindy) Corso, of Gibsonia, PA, Diane (Bill) Shoup of Huntsville, AL, Carol (Kim Winnard) Corso of Alexandria, VA, and Barbara (Jerome) Mayfield of Austin, TX. She leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Sarah (Cole) Moody of Huntsville, AL, Alexander (Casey) Winnard of Silver Spring, MD, Kendall Mayfield of San Antonio, TX and Amelia Winnard of Alexandria, VA, as well as her great-grandchildren, Will and Anneliese Moody of Huntsville, AL and sister, Vern (Stezoski) Schiff of Bowie, MD. She was so fortunate to share the love of many nieces and nephews and their children.
Theresa attended grade school at St. Anthony’s in Homestead and then Homestead High School, where she played the saxophone in the band, and met the love of her life, Tom Corso. She completed high school in 1945 and then attended Robert Morris College where she graduated in 1946 with a business degree. She was honored by Robert Morris University as one of their oldest living graduates. Theresa worked for Koppers in Pittsburgh for several years after completing her degree. She and Tom married in 1948 after Tom returned home from serving in the Navy in WWII. After they married, they relocated to San Diego, along with Tom’s parents, Anthony and Theresa and his sister, Marie. While in San Diego, Theresa worked in the Trust Department at the Bank of America.
In 1951, Theresa and Tom, missing their families and friends, and the four seasons, moved back to Pittsburgh, where Theresa gave birth to their first child, Alan. Her three daughters were also born in Pittsburgh where she and Tom had settled in West Mifflin. When Theresa’s youngest child, Barbara, started school, she went back to work in administration with the West Mifflin Borough, first as a clerk, later as Assistant Secretary and finally as Borough Secretary. At 62, she retired from the Borough and pursued her and Tom’s love of traveling and visited places far and wide around the world, along with family and friends.
Theresa was a lifelong volunteer and active in the church and schools. She trained the altar boys at Resurrection Church for many years, where she was also active in the CYO and the Marion Guild. At St. Thomas, Theresa volunteered in their pre-school and was involved with the Ladies of Charity. She led the rosary at Jefferson Manor for 18 years. Theresa was vice president of the Auxiliary of the Sisters of St. Francis and loved organizing travel trips for them and for the church. She and Tom were always the life of the party on those trips.
Theresa enjoyed a wonderful life of love and laughter. She was happiest spending time with her family and friends, traveling, playing cards with her lifelong girlfriends, enjoying bridge and spending time with her Jefferson Hills friends, attending social events, and cheering on her favorite sports teams, including the Steelers.
Theresa’s kindness and compassion, affectionate nature, sense of humor, love of sweets and of life itself, will be missed by her family, friends and everyone who met and knew her.
