John Buchanan
My favorite memory of \"my cousin Shirley\" was back in 1948 . I was 7 years old and, to my ear, Shirley was an accomplished piano player and singer at age 17. The Dave & Luella Buchanan's home on Third Street in Attleboro had a piano in their living room. That year \"I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover\" was the #1 song on the hit parade and I would sit on the piano bench with Shirley and she would teach me how to sing the \"Four Leaf Clover\" song with her. There was a talent contest for kids age 12 and under that summer at the Union Theater in Attleboro and cousin Shirley entered me in it to sing \"Four Leaf Clover\" acapella. It seemed every kid in Attleboro that year entered in the contest singing also learned the \"Four Leaf Clover\" song too. After listening for what seemed the 15th kid singing that \"I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover\", it was my turn and I refused to get out of my seat and go up on that stage to sing. Despite our one shot at fame going out the window that day, Shirley never held it against me and, for all our years since, she was my favorite cousin to be with because she was always so upbeat and loving.
