Phyllis "Sue" Wieczenski's Obituary
Phyllis “Sue” Wieczenski, age 71 of South Park, PA, formerly of West Homestead, PA passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Monday September 21, 2020 after a long battle against metastatic melanoma.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Donald Wieczenski. Three children, Donald (Jennifer) Wieczenski of Upper St. Clair, PA; Lori (Tim) DeGore of Bethel Park, PA; and Amy (Ed) Masilunas of Mt. Lebanon, PA. Eight grandchildren Lauren, Morgan, Christian, Zachary, Samantha, Oliva, Owen and Grace.
Sue was born and raised in West Homestead, PA the oldest of six children to Jean and Jack Wassell. Her siblings include Jack (late Barb) Wassell of Ashton, MD; Terry (Barb) Wassell of Morgantown, WV; late Michael Wassell formerly of Madison, AL; Tom (Amy) Wassell of North Huntington, PA; and Bill Wassell of Laurel, MD. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Sue graduated from Homestead High School, stayed at home to raise her children and later worked at Kaufman’s department store for over 20 years. Sue was a passionate Girl Scout troop leader and a role model for the girls. She excelled at cooking especially for family gatherings and made it seem easy and never disappointed. She was famous for her delicious lady lock cookies that she would make for holidays and family gatherings.
She was a brave, strong, thoughtful, caring, kind, patient, generous, gentle soul, who was an extremely good listener and always provided a positive spin on life and people. Sue was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church of Hays, PA. She volunteered her time at every church fish fry. She had a strong Christian faith that she put into practice every day outside of church.
Her real passion for life was her family and got extreme joy from her grandkids and completely embraced the role of “grandma”. She provided tremendous life and parenting advice to her own kids. (THANKS mom!) Sue loved to travel anywhere, but especially looked forward to the family beach and lake vacations. It wasn’t necessarily the destination, it was that her family was together, enjoying each other’s company, playing games and laughing.
The family would like to thank the nurses, doctors and therapists with AHN that helped her through the medical challenges. We appreciate all that you did!
Family and friends may gather at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15236 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM September 25, 2020. A blessing service will be held September 26th at 10 AM in the Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.
