Michael Maffei's Obituary
On Thursday, August the 11th, Michael D. Maffei took his place in Heaven. Michael, born on September 27, 1951, to Raymond and Julia (Borelli) Maffei. He grew up in Whitehall, PA, where he met the love of his life, and his lifelong companion Audrey (Arensberg) shortly before graduating from Baldwin High School in 69'. From there, Michael had a series of careers from GM Mechanic, to Sears appliance service to teaching vocational education at Conely Schools in Pittsburgh, finally settling on being an owner operator of his own tractor trailer, hauling steel for 22 years. Michael hung up the truck driving in 1999, and began working as a safety director for a local trucking company and then finally ventured out with his own compliance consultant company, S4CC (Safety for Carrier Compliance) in 2009. Being one to never sit idle, Michael was still working in a semi-retired fashion until recent events.
In addition to his years of work and experience in the trucking industry, he also sat on the Governors Motor Carrier Advisory Board for the State of Pennsylvania from 1995 to current. He was a member of the FMCA (Federal Motor Carrier Advisory board) for the past several years and was the president of the TSTA (Tri State Truckers Association).
Among many passions that Michael had, being a Civil War reenactor was one of the most important. Starting in the hobby as a walk-on solider, he quickly moved up into a leadership role, even having a short scene in the movie Gods and Generals, acting as Sergeant Major next to Jeff Daniels. He would eventually become the overall General of Birney's Division and oversee nearly 500 men for various reenactments all over the Northeast. He was also a very active member of the Stephen Bayard Masonic Lodge Number 526 in Elizabeth.
On the family side, Michael enjoyed being outdoors, camping in the Laurel Mountains, swimming in the Gulf of Mexico and spending any time he could sitting around a campfire with friends and family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Audrey; son, Michael and his wife, Julie; and their three children, Michael, Lyda and Joey; his brother, Stephen and his wife Elaine, and sister, Sandra and her husband Alan, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
