Age 75, of Pleasant Hills, died peacefully in her sleep Thursday morning May 19th with her loving husband of 56 years at her side. She is survived by her husband Gerald G. Lessmann and children Hans (Fred) Lessmann, Virginia (Ginny) Stonick, and Jean Crane. She is predeceased by her parents Eugene C. Whitney and Nina Jean Whitney (Knutson). She is survived by her grandchildren from Hans & Amy Lessmann- Nicole (Lessmann) Rogers, Jessica and Karl Lessmann; from Ginny & John Stonick- Karyssa and Zachary Stonick; and from Jean & Timothy Crane- Christopher, Patrick, & David Crane. She is also the beloved sister of James Whitney and Dr. Alan Whitney. She served on the Pleasant Hills Borough Council for many years. She was a lifelong member of the Pleasant Hills Community Presbyterian Church and the Sylvan Canoe Club in Verona, PA. Just like her mother before her, she supported the American Field Service (AFS) hosting several high school students from abroad, with whom she continued to keep in touch throughout her lifetime. She served with dedication and enthusiasm in her many roles as a community member, notably Girl Scout leader, softball coach, friend of the library and member of the Church Bell Choir among many others. She enjoyed books, writing letters, camping, hiking, sailing, canoeing, and family vacations, but mostly keeping in touch with family and friends from around the world. She was a consummate communicator and welcoming and supportive presence in her family and community. But most notably, she loved family, serving with unyielding devotion. She was a rock and mentor for the family and we are all very blessed to have had her in our lives for as long as we did. She will be missed. Friends will be received at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, Inc., 301 Curry Hollow Road on Wednesday May 25th from 2-4pm and 6-8pm and a memorial service will be held Friday May 27th at 11am at the Pleasant Hills Community Presbyterian Church, 199 Old Clairton Road, Pleasant Hills 15236. Friends are invited to a lunch immediately following the service. Donations in Margaret’s memory may be sent to Pleasant Hills Community Presbyterian Church.
