Margaret Baker Edmunds' Obituary
We will greatly miss our Margaret (Peggy) Baker Edmunds. Born February 25, 1942 (Pittsburgh, PA), entering Eternal Life June 9, 2026.
Peggy was the cherished daughter and only child of the late Ellen May (O'Connor) Baker and James Edward Baker. Irish on her Mom's side (O'Connor,/Co. Kerry, Kelly/Co. Kilkenny then settled in Ambridge), German on her Dad's side.
Peggy grew up in Pittsburgh's Allentown neighborhood at a time when Pittsburgh, because of its industry, was a true melting pot. The neighborhood was where she built many of her dearest lifelong friendships with grade-schoolmates then they were all on their way to St. George's High School. While she never missed a Basketball game or School dance (even snuck out of the dorms on the class trip to Notre Dame) she somehow always mastered her subjects. Peggy achieved the Mellon-Scaife Scholarship allowing her to attain her BS in Political Science at Duquesne University.
After school, Peggy settled in Pittsburgh's Carrick neighborhood with her Parents. She was a hard-working single Mother in raising her son Don within walking distance of Concord Elementary School on Dellrose Avenue and the benefit of having her Parents (now Pop and Gram) and Grandfather (Great Grandfather or Pap) all pitching in together. It was a wonderful time. Somehow even while working full time and on a career trajectory, Peggy always made time for family adventure and always was active in taking a stand on what she was working hard for in the community or related to school issues. She always believed in real work. She believed in critical thinking, being authentic, and had a clear sense of giving back.
One fortunate day, she met the love of her Life, Donald Lucien Edmunds (PPG Design Engineer) in the Stouffer's Coffee shop near the Gateway Center. 'Big Don' was a Vermonter (Lyndonville) having gone to school in Massachusetts (Worcester Polytech) then moving to Pittsburgh from New England with his career progression from Alcoa to PPG. They began dating, ice skating, and enjoying time together that ultimately led to bringing the family together in Bethel Park. 'D.L.' (as she called him) and Peggy became life partners. They knew they were good for one another, they worked hard in their relationship and for their children in blending the family - Don was widowed with two adult daughters, Sisters to join young Don as their Brother. Peggy is survived by Nancy (Edmunds ) Hisaw / Roger (Florida) and Donald (Christal) Edmunds, she was predeceased by Carol (Edmunds) Rose. Married 28 years, they had the opportunity to travel together across the U.S. and abroad. Peggy achieved her Masters (MS, Communications) at LaRoche University and had a long, distinguished career in large scale nuclear proposal writing with Westinghouse. A rich life as measured by the Love they had for one another and the time they shared. After saying to her 'Forever isn't long enough', DL Edmunds died May 31, 1999 at 85 years old after a long battle with Leukemia.
Peggy left it all out on the Field of Life - she gave her all in all roles that she had as a Spouse, Partner, Mother, Grandmother, Friend, Professional, and even in making your acquaintance.
The list of cherished Friends, Family, Colleagues, and simply just people Peggy has touched would be so long as to ensure we left out someone unintentionally. To You, all of you, we Thank You, we See you, we Remember you...and most we Love you. May God Bless You All.
