Margaret Bozurich's Obituary
Margaret Rebecca Bozurich, known also as Peg, Peggy, Red, Mum and Grandma, of Matthews, NC was born on December 5, 1928 in Irvona, PA to William and Beulah Lewis and gently left this world, surrounded by love, on September 4, 2020 in Huntersville, NC.
Peg grew up in Cambria County, PA and lived most of her life in her treasured city of Pittsburgh.
In her younger years, she served as a fine dining waitress at Klein's in downtown Pittsburgh, but her life's work was as a homemaker, wife to her dear husband Mike and mom to her four beloved boys, Jim, Keith, Bill and Bruce. Undoubtedly, her most cherished role, and one she undeniably excelled at, was that of grandmother to her four adoring grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Peg was the embodiment of the word welcoming. It was a rare occasion that the seats at her dining room table were not occupied by neighbors and guests who stopped by to say hello or to spend the afternoon. Friends and family, near and far, wouldn't hesitate to pop in unannounced. They knew Peggy was always waiting with open arms, a fresh pot of coffee, a platter of sandwich fixings and, on occasion, a slightly off-color joke.
Peggy loved holidays and reveled in entertaining large crowds of all ages. Her special brand of generous hospitality had a magical way of making a cottage feel like a chateau. If you spent time at any of her get-togethers, then you know that, never in your life, have you been more comfortable than when you were seated for Christmas dinner for 30 around a table meant for 10, gathered at a shindig for 100 at her tiny summer home in the mountains of Donegal or packed into her little West Mifflin bungalow for New Year's Eve with 50 of your closest friends.
She was famous for her 4th of July picnics, complete with an elaborate dinner spread, swimming in the lake and an evening fireworks display. Many fun days were spent gathered at the Bozurich hobby farm in Perryopolis, swimming in the pool, enjoying the animals and sharing a meal and a laugh. Wherever she was, friends flocked to her.
The term friend is, of course, used lightly. Her friends were her family and her family were her friends. Even after she moved away, Peggy kept those dear to her close. She spent hours chatting away on the phone and frequently had company from back home come to see her in Florida and North Carolina.
Peggy was an avid reader of all types of literature, but mysteries were her favorite. A night owl by nature, she could often be found devouring the latest James Patterson or revisiting an Agatha Christie favorite into the wee hours of the morning.
Peg lived a long and healthy life, only beginning to slow down over the last few years. However, her mind remained as sharp as a tack, retaining, up until her stroke in July, the ability to tell stories about things that happened decades before in great detail and with impeccable clarity.
We were blessed to have her for nearly 92 years. As much as she will be missed, we are happy she has been reunited, in Heaven, with the many others who have gone before.
Peggy is preceded in death by her parents, William and Beulah Lewis, husband Michael Bozurich, siblings Roy Lewis, William Lewis Jr., Leona Dukes and Betty Thomas, sons Keith, Bruce and Jim Hannon, grandson Daniel Hannon and great-grandson Noah Hannon.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law and caretaker, Carol Hannon, son William Hannon, brother Jim Lewis, grandchildren Heath Hannon, Amy and Mark Roper and Dana and Domingo Palos, great grandchildren Ashley, Molly, Seth, Sophia, Chase, Landon, Carlee, Miles and Tyler and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
The family wishes to thank the medical professionals at the Presbyterian Hospital Charlotte neuroscience unit and at Olde Knox Commons who lovingly cared for her through the last two months.
Flowers can be sent to Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home in Pittsburgh. (Peg adored fall flowers and specifically requested them for her service.) Donations can be sent in her honor to the American Stroke Association.
Friends will be received from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM on Friday, September 11th at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, 301 Curry Hollow Road Pittsburgh, PA. A Celebration of Life will be held at Georgetown Centre 526 E. Bruceton Road Pittsburgh, PA 15236 at 12 Noon on Saturday, September 12th.
