Kathryn A. "Cassie" Ackerman's Obituary
Kathryn "Cassie" Ackerman, 95, of West Mifflin, died December 8, at Atria Senior Living where she resided for the past 2 years. Born June 3, 1922 in West Mifflin, Cassie was the oldest of 5 children. As a teenager, she lost both of her parents to illness and went to work as a "Rosie the Riveter" at the US Steel Irvin Works. She was raised with a belief in hard work and devotion to family and God. She and her late husband, Harry V. Ackerman, married Feb. 12, 1944 and were together for 55 years. She is survived by a daughter, Janice (Richard) Kleiser of Bethel Park; a brother, Patrick (Ruth) Massung of White Oak; grandchildren, Harry and Karen; great-grandchildren, Megan, Erica, Matthew, and Kathryn; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband; 2 sisters, Thelma Smith and Mary Lou Hartnett; a brother, Lawrence Massung; and her parents, Lawrence and Sarah Massung, all of West Mifflin. Cassie always had a bright smile, loved to play cards, cook Sunday dinners and bake pies. She was a retired grocery store cashier and a long-time Meals on Wheels volunteer. She was a member of St. Ann Auxiliary of Divine Redeemer Academy, McKeesport Hospital Auxiliary and Holy Spirit Church in West Mifflin. Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, December 12, from 9:30-11:30 AM at the JEFFERSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, INC., 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pittsburgh, 15236. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12 noon at Holy Spirit Church, West Mifflin. Interment will follow at Jefferson Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank or Holy Spirit Church.
