Kathleen M. Sutherland's Obituary
Kathleen "Kathy" Sutherland, a resident of Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania, passed away on February 20, 2026, following a battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on January 12, 1953, in Bulger, Pennsylvania, she lived a life defined by creativity, resilience, and a deep care for those around her.
Kathy was a woman of distinct character who was known for being exceptionally thoughtful. She possessed a talent for remembering dates, ensuring that family milestones, birthdays, and anniversaries were never overlooked. Those who knew her best appreciated her ability to be a good listener, always offering full attention, warmth, and care to those in need of an ear. While she was kind and gentle in her demeanor, she was also recognized for being strong-willed, a trait that provided her with immense resilience throughout her life and during her illness.
Her hands were rarely still, as she found great joy in various creative and natural pursuits such as crochet knitting and diamond art. Kathy had a unique and beautiful passion for raising monarch butterflies, finding delight in the delicate process of their transformation. Additionally, she was an avid reader who loved to get lost in a good book. During the holidays and special occasions, friends and family eagerly anticipated her famous homemade peppermint bark and cookies, a sweet tradition that will be missed.
Kathy was a familiar and welcome face at her local senior center where she enjoyed the company of her peers and participated in community activities including bingo, to which we always admired her lucky hand. As a woman of Christian faith, she held her spiritual beliefs with quiet dignity, finding comfort in her religion as she approached the end of her journey.
She leaves behind a loving family who will cherish memories of her comfort, wisdom, and gentle humor. Kathy is survived by her two sons, Tom and Carl Sutherland, father of her children, Scott, daughter-in-law, Abbey Sung, her sister, Janice Lydick, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life with family and friends will be announced for a later date to honor her memory. As her loved ones reflect on her passing and her love for nature, they find comfort she has found peace in God’s care.
Like a butterfly, she has flown off to a beautiful, peaceful place.
