Kareem Demian's Obituary
In solemn remembrance, we announce the passing of Kareem Atef Demian, on June 29, 2025 in Pittsburgh, PA. He was born on February 25, 1980 in Cairo, Egypt to Atef and Nagwa Demian.
Kareem graduated from South Park High School and went on to earn a Bachelor's of Information Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh. After graduation, he continued to work in Informational Technology (IT) at the University. His career later led him to Carnegie Mellon University where he eventually was appointed IT Manager in the Software Engineering Institute.
Kareem's professional work was important to him, but the moments spent with family and friends were his most cherished time. Most days before and during his battle with cancer, you would likely not find Kareem at home. Instead, he was biking, playing basketball, football, soccer, pickleball, planning outings, and parties, singing at karaoke, and the list goes on. For many years, Kareem has been active in the Pittsburgh Sports League (PSL) participating in kickball and bowling. Within the league, he is affectionately known as "Captain K". He has also volunteered as a Big Brother within the Big Brothers Big Sisters Organization as well as spoken on behalf of One Day to Remember, an organization which provides families of children with parents diagnosed with advanced-stage cancer a fun, cost-free day to enjoy memories together.
Known as the life of the party but never the center of attention, Kareem was a character from the start. He never missed an opportunity to brighten someone's day. His wit and charm were on display with every person he met. Those who truly knew Kareem also witnessed his thoughtfulness, intelligence, and appreciation for living in the moment.
Above all else, Kareem was a devoted father, always making time for his children, whether it was coaching a number of his kids' teams as "Coach K", traveling with them on new adventures, creating new games to play, or simply spending a day in the pool together. There is nothing he valued more. He always made the holidays and vacations more fun for his boys and the rest of the family.
Along with his parents, Kareem is survived by his sons, Maximus (16) and Dexter (9); his sister, Carmen (Todd); brother, Christopher; his niece and nephew, Julia and Luke; and close cousins, Enas, Amgad, Emily, and Amanda. Kareem also leaves behind his "Aunt" Karen and "Uncle" Don and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents.
Kareem and the Demian family want to thank all of his steadfast, kind, and dedicated friends from all stages of his life who have been there for him and us. We would also like to recognize and thank the committed physicians and staff who made his fight, their fight.
Family and friends will be received for Visitation from 2-4pm and 6-8pm on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15236.
Memorial donations can be made in Kareem's name to One Day to Remember at https://www.onedaytoremember.org. An educational fund in the boys' names will be established in the near future.
