Julia Maurer's Obituary
Julia died on May 21, 2017, at Arden Courts Memory Care. She was 92. In addition to her quick wit, winning smile (those dimples), and kind words, she will be remembered for her strength of character and her determination to stay positive through adversity.
Julia was not an eager traveler, much to the chagrin of her late husband, Matt, but she joined him on many a trip. Vacation hiccups, however, occurred with regularity. There was the time her baggage (and only hers) landed on a busy road when the luggage compartment on her tour bus flung open. Then there was a 50th anniversary trip to Bermuda days after Hurricane Felix. She fractured her spine picking up her suitcase when the couple went to Aruba. These are but a few examples.
As a faithful servant of God, this final trip was one she greatly anticipated and planned a lifetime for. It included a one way ticket to paradise (no luggage), to see the Lord with her own eyes, and to be reunited with family and friends. Among those she was most eager to see again were husband Matt, whom she was married to for 59 years, and her son Daryl.
Julia was born on July 7,1924 in Clairton, PA. She was a founding member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in West Mifflin and prior to her marriage attended Ascension of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church in Clairton. Julia was a graduate of Clairton High School class of 1942. She is survived by a daughter, Sharon Maurer of West Mifflin, a son Dennis Maurer of Raleigh, NC, grandsons Aaron and Adam (Jessica) Maurer, great-granddaughters Addy, Anne Marie, and Eleanor, a sister Irene (Donald) Powell, sister-in-law Lynne Soltis, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Matt, and son, Daryl, Julia is predeceased by her mother, Ilona Soltis; father, George Soltis; stepfather, John Soltis; brothers, John K. and Michael Soltis; sisters, Mary Soltis, Ann Henderson, Helen Chromey, Susan Karpiak, Margaret Gavala; and stepsisters, Susie Soltis, Ann Majeski, and Mary Dudash.
The family would like to thank Julia's caring and compassionate extended family at Arden Courts for helping to make her final years comfortable and dignified.
Friends will be received from 2-8 PM on Thursday, May 25, at the JEFFERSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, INC., 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pittsburgh, 15236.
