Joseph J. Walters
of West Mifflin, who recently celebrated his 103rd birthday, passed away surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, September 12, 2016. Beloved husband of 56 years to the late Anna Virginia "Gige" Walters; loving father of JoAnn Lydic, Janet (Eli) Rakas, Jeff (Sue) Walters, Jill (Hank) Lester, Judy Walters-Patellis and Tommy (Jeannette) Griffith; cherished grandfather of Matt (Andrea) Lydic, Jenny (Mark) Gravel, Heather (Ian) Olson, Lindsey Walters, Sarah (Brett) Merrell, Chris (Ruby) Lester, and Rachel (Brandon) Polcawich; proud great grandfather of Brendan, Nolan, Mia, Macie, Evan. Isaac, Austin, Jadyn, Carter, Bailey, Jackson, Eliana, Amelia, Charlee, Lenox, and Hadley. Joe went into the Army Airforce in August of 1942. He was proud to be part of the "greatest generation." He was a ball turret gunner in the B17 Chug-a-lug Lulu. He was on the Schweinfurt raid in August of 1943. His plane was shot down in Boirs, Belguim. He parachuted into an apple tree where he was escorted to safety and helped thru the underground. He made his way back home to his loving wife Gige on December 31, 1943. He taught gunnery school at March Field in California. After leaving the military, they moved to West Mifflin where they raised their family and built their business, Joe Walters Bar and Restaurant. They operated the business for 54 years.Visitation will be held Friday, September 16 from 12 noon until 9 pm at the Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, Inc., 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pleasant Hills, where we will celebrate his life during a funeral ceremony on Saturday at 10 am in the funeral home chapel. Interment with Military Honors to immediately follow in Jefferson Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations to Healthcare Home Hospice would be appreciated, 150 Scharberry Lane, Mars, PA 16046.
