John Patrick "Pappy Boy" Guthrie's Obituary
John Patrick "Pappy Boy" Guthrie, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2023, in his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. Born on September 24, 1942, to Francis and Mary Ann (Foley) Guthrie, John was a pillar of strength and love in his family and community.
John is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Margaret Ann Guthrie, and their five children: John (Nikki) Guthrie, Amy (Richard) Defalco, Scott Guthrie, Laura (Rob) Mulligan, and Katy (Patrick) DeRenzo. He was a proud grandfather to Angelo, Lena, Benicio, Gianna, Flora, Aiden, Sonny, Jaxon, Brady, Gracie, Dexter, and Lily. His siblings, Donna (Ed) Winkowski and William Reed, along with many nieces and nephews, also survive him. John was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Sarah Moore, Mary O’Leary, and Debbie Darr, and his brother Joseph Guthrie.
John was a man of many passions. He had a keen interest in repairing antique clocks, a hobby that showcased his intelligence and meticulous nature. He was also an avid pool player, often seen shooting pool with friends and family. As a Life Member of The Castle Shannon Volunteer Fire Department, John demonstrated his commitment to his community and his courage. He was also a gun collector, a hobby that reflected his appreciation for history and craftsmanship.
John was a man who cherished his Irish heritage, often sharing stories and traditions with his loved ones. His love for his family was evident in everything he did. He was a loving and intelligent man who always had a kind word and a smile for everyone he met. He would want people to know that he "loved everybody" and "to be happy."
John's life was a testament to his character. He was a man who loved deeply, lived passionately, and left an indelible mark on everyone he met. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
Friends and family will be received on Thursday, October 19, from 3-7pm at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, Inc., 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pleasant Hills, PA, 15236.
