John Lawrence "Larry" Nehr's Obituary
John Lawrence "Larry" Nehr, 85, of Whitehall, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 3, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Detroit, MI, on April 26, 1938, the son of the late Stephen John and Carol Lottie (Cuis) Nehr.
Larry was the beloved husband of 65 years to Sherry (Schaefer) Nehr; loving father to Jeffrey (Cheryl) Nehr and Greg (Brenda) Nehr; the grandfather of Ashley Rabinek, and Gabrielle, Spencer, Brian, Matthew and Courtney Nehr; and the great grandfather of Everly and Ryder Rabinek. Larry is also survived by his siblings, Susan (Nehr) Voelcker, and Richard Nehr.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his sisters, Marlene (Nehr) Rose and Kay Ann (Nehr) Ball.
Larry grew up in Armada, MI, where he attended local schools. Following his graduation from high school, Larry proudly served our country in the United States Army where he was awarded a Certificate of Proficiency at the US Army Engineer School in Fort Belvoir, VA. After being honorably discharged from the service, Larry attended Allegheny Technical Institute where he studied practical industrial electronics. He retired as a manager from Keddal Aerial Mapping after a long career working with contour mapping and surveying.
In his free time, Larry made many fond memories while camping, riding his motorcycle, and traveling. He was an avid golfer, bowler, and enjoyed square dancing. He loved working in the yard and doing carpentry. Despite learning about computers later in life, he was smart with technology and could often be found with his iPhone and iWatch.
Larry will be remembered by those who knew him as a generous man who was always reaching out his hand to help his family, neighbors and friends. He was a great husband, wonderful father, and mentor.
Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for visitation from 12- 2 pm on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, 301 Curry Hollow Rd., Pittsburgh, PA 15236. A Blessing Service will be held in the funeral home's chapel at 2:00 pm. Burial with military honors will follow at Jefferson Memorial Park.
