John Paul Kirkpatrick's Obituary
John Paul Kirkpatrick passed away January 20, 2021 at Largo Medical Center in Largo Florida. He was a resident of Curlew Landing community in Indian Rocks Beach, south of St. Petersburg, FL.
John was born August 3, 1944 in Brentwood (Pittsburgh, PA) the third child of Paul George Kirkpatrick and Vera Mae Denny (from Indiana). His older sisters are Sherryl Ann and Mary Lynn whom he would love to tease. As a youngster, he showed his bent for business first by selling homemade popsicles from a Coca-Cola cooler on his red wagon in the summertime. John followed in his sisters’ footsteps and graduated from Baldwin High School, Class of ’62, a member of the Highlander Band-clarinet section.
John spent his college years at University of Akron, graduating with BA in Accounting. John was recruited to U. S. Steel in Pittsburgh and worked for U.S.S. and USX his entire career of accounting and auditing. Some of his positions took him to other places such as Philadelphia, Maine, Nova Scotia, Houston and California where he resided above the Redondo Beach pier. He joined Mary Lynn and husband Larry Norby on family vacation trips including one where he was introduced to skiing at Mammoth!
John, astutely arranged his retirement at the age of 49 and lived near his parents in Florida. While he would come north annually or west for weddings, he mostly enjoyed his Florida environment, walking or biking along the beach and watching the birds. He did tax preparations for friends and neighbors, and was a support and fourth for bridge with his mom after his father passed away in 1981.
After previously being a renter for years, John finally became a resident owner at Curlew Landing in Indian Rocks Beach. He used his accounting background as a member of the Homeowners Association for many years. Besides managing his investments, John took time to enjoy and support sports teams. He, of course, was a Pirates and Steelers fan because of his Pittsburgh upbringing; then he began to support the Tampa Bay Rays and Tampa football as well. He enjoyed the chance to discuss sports with his friendly neighbors.
