James L. Hoffman's Obituary
James L. "Jim" Hoffman, age 78, loving husband to Bobbie (Ninness) Hoffman, passed away on Monday, July 31, 2023. Jim was born on February 3, 1945, in Carrick, the son of the late Donald and Ruth (Yenke) Hoffman.
Jim attended St. Basil's High School and, upon graduation, pursued his passion for public service at the police academy. He began his career with the Allegheny County Park Police, dedicating his life to serving others and maintaining the safety and security of his community. Jim's tenure with the City of Pittsburgh Police Department was marked with commendable service and dedication until his retirement in 1995. His bravery and honorable dedication to his career did not go unnoticed, as he was awarded a special commendation in 1974, a testament to his unwavering commitment to his profession.
Outside of his professional life, Jim was a man of many interests. Following his retirement, he could often be found listening to the police scanner. He was a classic car enthusiast, with a special fondness for his Mini Cooper, affectionately named "Annie." He brought the same dedication he had for his work to his hobbies. Jim's love for bowling was evident through his active participation in a league, where he enjoyed friendly competition with his friends and his beloved wife, Bobbie.
An avid outdoorsman, Jim found peace and tranquility in the beauty of nature. Whether fly fishing or hunting, he embraced the spirit of adventure these activities brought. A true craftsman, he tied all of his own fly-ties.
Those who knew Jim will remember him as a kind man, always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need. His selflessness was evident in his commitment to public service and his consistent willingness to put others before himself.
Jim is survived by his wife of 36 years, Bobbie Hoffman; two daughters, Jamie (Todd) Miller and Jennifer (Landon) Fries and his step-daughter, Nicole (Paul) Hinnebusch. Jim also leaves his 13 grandchildren who affectionately called him Pap; 2 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his siblings, Janet Leng and Donald C. Hoffman.
