Imelda "Mel" Unites' Obituary
Imelda ( Mel) McDermott-Unites, age 77, of West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2026 surrounded by the love of family and friends. Born on June 13, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Bernard McDermott and the late Ellen McKenna McDermott. Mel was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 13 years, Robert Unites. Mel was the cherished mother of Angela (Rick) Nesky and devoted grandmother of Robert, Drake and Joshua Nesky. She is survived by her sister, Ann Zebner Pollock and by three sisters-in-law, Barbara Odoski, Patty ( William) Piekut and Leanne Papi as well as two brothers-in-law, the late Jerry (Fran) Unites and Thomas (Fran) Unites. She will be sorely missed by her many nieces and nephews. The heart of her family, Mel leaves behind a void that can never be filled.
For thirty-five years, Mel taught English at the Middle School and High School levels at the Steel Valley School District. A devoted teacher, Mel worked diligently to provide her students with the best possible education. She built strong relationships with her students and provided them with support both academically and emotionally.
Among her greatest joys was her love of travel. With her friends she visited Europe, cruised the Mediterranean and traveled across America from coast to coast. Mel was always up for an adventure.
At all times Mel was guided by her deep Catholic faith which provided her with solace during difficult times and enhanced the joyous moments in her life.
Family and friends will fondly recall times filled with laughter, deep conversations and moments that highlight the bond they shared.
Family and friends are welcome for visitation on Sunday March 22, 2026 from 2:00pm to 8:00pm at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home 301 Curry Hollow Rd Pittsburgh PA 15236. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00am on Monday March 23 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church 1 Grove Pl. Pittsburgh, PA 15236.
