George S. Thompson's Obituary
George S. Thompson, 96, of Finleyville, Pennsylvania, died on August 17, 2024, at Greentree Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation in Pittsburgh, PA.
He was born October 6, 1927, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of the late George T. and Carrie Thompson. He was an only child. George attended Peabody Highschool in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Army (1946 -1947) as a musician (Saxophonist) in the Army band.
On August 11, 1952, George was joined in holy matrimony with Louise Winton together they raised 2 children Marie (Josie), and Tyrone. They were blessed to witness 62 years of marriage.
After his discharge from the army, George spent a few years working in construction and demolition, he later spent 30 plus years working as a carpenter for Alcosan (Allegheny Sanitation Authority) and retired in the early 1990’s. On nights and weekends, he spent more than 45 years as working jazz musician in the Pittsburgh Area. Jazz was his persona and his passion.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marie, and Cecil Brooks (Pittsburgh Area); grandchildren Anita & Son-in-law Clay Harvey (North Carolina), Chris Kelley (Southern California), Trevor & Daughter-in-law Dawn Kelley (Eastern Pennsylvania), Mark & Daughter-in-law Janet Kelley (Southern, California); Cousin Cheryl Graves (Pittsburgh Area), and Nephews Leon Broadus (Pittsburgh Area), Wilbur Broadus (Maryland), Brenda Bates (Pittsburgh Area), and a host of great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2PM on Saturday, September 21st at Jefferson Memorial Cemetery in Pittsburgh, PA.
