George J. Nickol's Obituary
Age 89 of Bethel Park passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 8, 2016. Cherished father of Roger (Pam Donnelly) and Sharon (Eric Maerkle), and Grandfather to Ian, Sean, and Ryan Maerkle. George was preceded in death by his loving wife Dorothy, and his two sisters Virginia and Louise. Born and raised in Altoona, he was drafted into the Army after High School and served in Germany during the final years of WWII. He was employed by Ryan Homes for over 25 years, retiring early at the age of 62.
In addition to the great love he had for his family, his life-long passion was being an artist. He created numerous works in a number of mediums, but his first love was wood carving. He was a multiple award winner for his entries in the Ward Wildfowl International competition in Ocean City, MD and has displayed his work locally in the Pittsburgh area, including the National Aviary. He also served as an officer and member of the South Arts Pittsburgh based in Bethel Park.
Family and friends are to be received at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5-9 PM. A Funeral service is to be held at Ruthfred Lutheran Church on Thursday at 11 AM. Interment to follow at Jefferson Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to South Arts Pittsburgh, 2600 South Park Road, Bethel Park, PA 15102.
