George Fernan DePasse's Obituary
George Fernan DePasse, age 81 of North Carolina, formerly of Pittsburgh and Clark’s Summit, passed away on September 13th, 2020. Husband of 51 years to Mary Ann Evans; father of Gregory Evans DePasse and Renee Theresa DePasse; grandfather of Rebecca, Reese, Ben, Chase, Sophia, and Brooks. Brother of Victor Joseph DePasse Jr. and Vicki Joann DePasse; son of the late Victor Joseph DePasse and Rose Pleva DePasse.
George was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. His career started in the Navy where his love to travel really set in and continued while working 33 years at IBM as a System Engineer. Between work and family trips, he spent a lot of time seeing the world. He loved hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. He learned to ski late in life and overcame many “yard sale” crashes (including losing a ski boot) to join the Ski Patrol at Montage Mountain for 10 years. For those who knew him, he was always cracking jokes and making people laugh and feel welcome and comfortable. He was one of the only husbands to successfully critique his wife’s cooking and lived to tell the tale. He would sing “Angelica” to her (which basically said “your mother has to take you back and teach you the things you lack”). To his children, he taught them they could do things the easy way or the hard way which has been passed along to the next generation (sorry grandkids). He was an avid reader and never stopped learning. There are unconfirmed reports of libraries requesting books from his collection and local universities coming to him for advice. He once (jokingly) told a new mother coworker to sell her child while they were cute and worth something, which didn’t go over well at the time. It wasn’t until years later that the mother appreciated the guidance, but unfortunately it was too late. He also wisely advised people to hire teenagers while they knew it all (of course, the humor was lost on the “know-it-all” teenager at the time and wasn’t realized until later in life when they had their own teens). He was generous with his kindness and always willing to lend a hand. He will be missed greatly by those who knew him.
Family and friends will be welcomed on Saturday, Sept 19th, 2020, for a visitation from 11:30am-12:30pm. Immediately following, Military Honors will be held outside of the funeral home at 12:45pm, at the JEFFERSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, INC., 301 Curry Hollow Road, 15236.
