Eugene H. Schaefer's Obituary
Eugene H. "Gene" Schaefer, age 102, of Bethel Park, passed away at home on August 5, 2025.
After growing up in Denver, Gene earned his Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado. He proudly served as an Electric Technician's Mate in the United States Navy, where he displayed both commitment and expertise. Following his military service, Gene embarked on a prolific 48-year career at Westinghouse, contributing significantly to the Nuclear Power Division at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory. His work in this vital industry was marked by innovation and integrity, and he became a respected figure among his peers.
In addition to his engineering career, Gene shared his love of water with others as a YMCA scuba instructor. He was also active with the Highlanders in his younger years. His passions for swimming, bicycling and hiking remained with him well into his late 90s. Gene was known for his patient, pragmatic, and responsible nature-qualities that left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Eugene is survived by his children Ron Schaefer, Henry Schaefer, and Maria Rectenwald-Rafalski; grandsons Ben Rafalski and Dan Rafalski.
He is preceded in death by his first wife Ramona Schaefer, second wife Rita Schaefer, his partner of 16 years Bell Bernstein, parents Henry and Bertha Schaefer, and brothers Don and Bob Schaefer.
Services are private. Family under the care of Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home.
