Estelle Eleftheriou's Obituary
Estelle Eleftheriou, 90, passed away peacefully at home on September 18, 2021, with her family by her side. She was the loving wife of Stamos Eleftheriou.
She was born in Pittsburgh, PA, April 5, 1931 to the late Christos and Chrysa Christides.
Estelle is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Stamos; son, Nicholas Eleftheriou; daughter, Chrisanne (Kevin) Burr; her cherished granddaughter, Kristen Burr; nephew, Christopher Lewis; nieces Maria Heliotis, and Irene Kratsios and their families, as well as numerous cousins.
She was predeceased by her sister, Erma Lewis.
Estelle was a graduate of Carnegie Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry and held a United States Steel Corporation fellowship at Mellon Institute prior to her marriage. After raising her children, Estelle was selected as one of fifty women to complete a “Women in Science” program to retrain women to re-enter the scientific community. She was then employed as an industrial hygienist for the Department of Labor, Bureau of Mines, Mine Safety and Health Administration from 1980 until her retirement.
She was a lifelong member of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church. She was an active member of the church choir, the church bowling league, the Golden Club, the Yassou club, and the Daughters of Penelope.
Estelle loved to learn and enjoyed taking classes with her husband as a Carnegie Mellon Alumni at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. She loved to travel, was an avid reader and a crossword puzzle enthusiast. Most of all she loved being a wife, mother, and grandmother and will be deeply missed.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Church for visitation from 10:00-11:00 am at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, 123 Gilkeson Road, Pittsburgh, PA, 15228 on Tuesday September 21st. Following visitation a service will be held from 11:00-12:00pm. Interment will follow at Jefferson Memorial Cemetery. Everyone to meet at church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church.
The family kindly requests that masks been worn inside the church, regardless of vaccination status.
