Earl 'Dave' Sweeney, Jr.'s Obituary
Earl D. Sweeney, Jr., better known as Dave, passed away on September 17, 2024. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Dave was a man of honor and integrity, whose life was marked by his dedication to his family, his country, and his career.
Dave is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Charlene Sweeney, who was his partner in every sense and his best friend. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter. He was a proud father and very close friend to his son, Doug (Sally Sally) Sweeney, and a doting grandfather (Paw) to Samuel and Gavin Sweeney, who brought immense joy and pride to his life. Dave also leaves behind his brother, Daniel (Marcia) Sweeney. Also survived by his sister in laws Joyce (the late Mark) Schmidt and Linda (Jim) McFarland; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl, Olive, and Bernadette Sweeney.
Dave's commitment to service was evident through his six years of service in the US Air Force, ending as a Captain, serving with distinction in the Philippines and California. After his military service, he embarked on a successful career in the banking industry, retiring as a Senior Vice President from both Mellon and Citizens Bank. His leadership and wisdom were valued by all who worked alongside him.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dave was a man of many interests. He loved fishing, golfing, and bowling, and he cherished the opportunities to go on vacations and cruises with his family and friends. However, his favorite place to be was sitting on the back deck overlooking his backyard. Dave was a big family man at heart, always eager to spend time with his loved ones. A highlight of his year was a trip to Canada with Doug, Sam, Gavin (Gator) and friends. His hands were rarely still, as he enjoyed tinkering with various projects around the house, always finding something to improve or fix.
Dave's legacy is one of love, service, and commitment. His presence was a source of stability and strength for his family, and his guidance and support will be deeply missed. His laughter, his stories, and his unwavering love for his family will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
