Delwyn E. Gealy's Obituary
Delwyn "Del" Gealy, beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2023, surrounded by his family. Born November 10, 1948, Del was a man of great character and charm, known for his love of golf, oldies music, and Pittsburgh sports.
Del is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Gealy And by their devoted son and daughter, Evan and Regan Gealy, and their spouses Stephanie Woods and Cameron McCleary. He is also survived by his sister, Helen “Colleen” Mara and her husband, Charles F. Mara. He was preceded in death by his parents, Delwyn Sr. and Dorothy Gealy, who instilled in him a strong sense of family and community, and a son, Aaron Gealy, who succumbed to Leukemia in 1999.
Del earned a B.S. in Math from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and went on to work for many years as Director of IT at Highmark. In his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife (planning each trip down to the minute), listening to audiobooks, and trying to beat his golf handicap while serving as secretary of the league. A lifelong fan of Pittsburgh sports, he would cheer on his teams from the bleachers or the comfort of his living room. He could always be counted on to help his children organize a move or take on a home remodeling project, even when it meant missing the game (he’d tape it—no spoilers allowed!).
He took his responsibilities seriously but wasn’t afraid to be a little silly. He enjoyed comedy and might diffuse a tense moment with a joke or a funny expression.
He loved a good diner breakfast, dark chocolate, hard pretzels, and a rare bourbon at poker night. He loved classic car cruises and the sounds of Motown and Doo-wop.
Del will be remembered for his warm heart, his sense of humor, and his steadfast love for his family. His legacy of generosity, compassion, and kinship will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday from 10am to 12 pm at the Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pittsburgh, 15236.
