Debra A. Curry's Obituary
Debra A. Curry, age 72, of Jefferson Hills, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, in the comfort of her own home, surrounded by the love of her family. Debra was born on March 10, 1951, the daughter of the late Ernest and Lucy J. (Perisich) Dunbar.
Born and raised in Clairton, Debra attended local schools where she established the foundation of her lifelong passion for education. Her quest for knowledge led her to Robert Morris University, where she earned her associate degree, and later, to California University of Pennsylvania, where she received her master’s degree in education. After completing her education, Debra embarked on a fulfilling career that spanned more than two decades as a reading teacher at West Jefferson Hills School District.
Beyond the classroom, Debra was an avid reader, a passion that she not only shared with her students but also cherished in her personal life. Her love for books was only matched by the joy she found in spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren, especially when making memories at the beach on family vacations.
Her selflessness extended into her community involvement, where she volunteered at Jefferson Hospital, bringing her service dog, Wicket, to the comfort of patients. The duo was a familiar and welcome sight throughout the hospital corridors, bringing smiles and solace to those in need.
Debra is survived by her beloved husband, Robert “Bob” Curry; her children, Brian J. Barca, Amber L. (Scott) Pearson and Tara L.C. (Marc) Hille; grandchildren, Colin, Aiden, Athena and Orion; and two brothers, Don and Malcom (Suzanne) Dunbar. Debra also leaves her beloved furry companion, Wicket.
Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for visitation on Friday, December 22, 2023 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15236. A service in honor of Debra will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday in the chapel at the funeral home. Burial will be held privately.
