Billy Duane Monk's Obituary
Of Pittsburgh, on May 8, 2017, age 91. Billy is survived by sons, Frederick Michael (Carla D.) and Paul Patrick (late Willette) Monk; grandchildren, Joshua G., John G., Misty D., and Benjamin M. Monk, and Tara A. Monk and Tiffany L. Spaulding; and 6 and 2/3 great-grandchildren. Billy was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Phyllis B. Monk (Testal).
While a student at Kalamazoo Central High School he received the Honorary Science Award from Bosch & Lomb. A world War II Veteran, he served in the U.S. Army in the 86th Infantry Division from June 1943 to May 1946 in the European theater. He earned 6 meritorious medals. Following his tour of duty he graduated from the University of Michigan in 1950 with a B. S. in Electrical Engineering, and married the love of his life, Phyllis Testal. They were able to celebrate their 65h anniversary before she passed. He worked for many years at Bettis Atomic Power Lab on various projects and the breeder reactor and the nuclear reactor powering the submarine, USS Seawolf. He loved golf, bowling, traveling, backpacking, skiing, and bocce ball, winning the 2015 Providence Point championship with his wife. He also loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church in Bethel Park, and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Howell, Michigan. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Friends will be received on Thursday, May 11, from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the JEFFERSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, INC., 301 Curry Hollow Rd., Pleasant Hills, 15236. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, May 12, 11 AM, at the Christ United Methodist Church, 44 Highland Rd., Bethel Park, 15102. Everyone please meet at church. Interment will follow at Jefferson Memorial Park.
