Bernadette Marie Furin's Obituary
Bernadette Furin, 79, of West Mifflin, PA. passed away peacefully on April 16, 2024.
Bernadette earned a Bachelor of Science in Education as well as Master of Social Work and Master of Divinity degrees. She served as a Catholic School Teacher and in Leadership with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden from 1977-1985. Her passion for helping others led to several positions in medical and psychiatric social work for families, children, and geriatric care at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, Allegheny Neuropsychiatric Institute, Presbyterian Hospital, Ursuline Center, and Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute.
After retirement in 2009, she worked part-time in similar roles for Jefferson Regional Medical Center, Asera Care, and the Multiple Sclerosis Service Society. She served as an Attendant at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home. Bernadette was a Registered Minister through Open Ministry and performed private ceremonies including baptism, marriage, and renewal of vows. She was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Pleasant Hills and volunteered at fundraising events with friends to assist individual and nonprofit needs in the community.
Bernadette’s favorite pastimes included daily spiritual readings, card playing, cooking favorite Hungarian dishes, golf and putt-putt games, indoor planting, Casino outings and celebrations with friends, and Sunday dinners with her sister Barbara and her cherished caretakers. She devotedly cared for several adopted pets.
Bernadette is survived by her loving spouse Katherine FH Heart, sister Barbara Furin, and cousins Carla Sandy, Betsy Watson, JR Watson, Juliet Watson-Spry, Skip Davis, Veronica Shutty, Linda Shusteric, Albert Zidek, and others in their large extended family.
Preceded in death by her mother and father, John and Helen Furin.
Friends and family will be received on Saturday, April 20th, from 4-7pm at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, Inc., 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pleasant Hills, PA, 15236.
A Funeral Service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 7pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Katherine Heart for Bernadette’s end of life medical expenses and a future memorial fund in Bernadette’s name.
