Anthony J. Betz III's Obituary
Anthony J. Betz III, affectionately known as Tony, passed away on August 11, 2023, at St. Clair Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, the city of his birth on December 12, 1946. Tony was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. His life was a remarkable testament to the power of love, selflessness, and thoughtfulness, qualities that he embodied in every aspect of his life.
Tony was the cherished husband of Nancy L. Betz (McElwee) for 55 years. Together, they raised their three beautiful daughters: Melissa Diane (Aaron) Malignani, Allison Renee (Don) Batiste, and Jennifer Lynne (Brad) Dzurovchin. Tony was the proud grandfather of Amanda Renee Dzurovchin and Emily Diane Dzurovchin. He was the dear brother of James R. (Kathy) Betz and was an adored uncle to his niece and nephews, Joann (Brian) Salsgiver, James (Christy) Betz Jr., and Kevin (Ashley) Betz. Tony also leaves behind many cousins and friends who will deeply miss him.
Tony was a graduate of Duquesne University, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences. His first job was at Islay's in Brookline. He went on to work with his dad, uncles, and cousins at Iron City Brewing Company while he was in college. As a true Pittsburgh man, these experiences paved the way for his future endeavors. After graduating, Tony put his pharmaceutical knowledge into practice, owning Betz Pharmacy in McMurray, PA, starting in 1980, and later O'Brien's Pharmacy in Bethel Park in 1988.
Life with Tony was full of love, laughter, and memorable moments. He and his wife raised their daughters in Bethel Park, where he was not just a father but a pillar of support, love, and wisdom. Tony had a heart full of love for his family and friends, and he always made sure they knew it.
Tony's interests were as diverse as they were engaging. He loved spending time with friends and family, creating memories that will be cherished forever. A man who loved the sea and the sand, Tony enjoyed vacationing in Ocean City, New Jersey, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Orlando, Florida with his family. He and his wife also loved traveling, especially to Colorado later in life. He was also a man of faith, serving as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Joan of Arc Church for many years. Tony was an avid fan of Pittsburgh sports teams, he had a passion for football, baseball, and hockey.
Tony's life was one of dedication, love, and selflessness. He was a man who put others before himself, a trait that endeared him to all who knew him. He was a loving husband, a devoted father, a doting grandfather, a caring brother, cherished uncle, and a loyal friend. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him. Rest in peace, Tony. Your life was a gift to us all, and we are all better for having known you.
Family and friends will be welcomed for visitation on Tuesday, August, 15, 2023 from 12:00pm-4:00pm and 6:00pm-8:00pm at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home Inc., 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pleasant Hills, PA 15236. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at 10:30am-11:30am at St. Louise de Marillac Church - St. Catherine Laboure Parish, 320 McMurray Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15241. If travelling in procession please meet at the funeral home no later than 9:00am. Burial to follow in Jefferson Memorial Park.
