Anna Mae passed away peacefully at age 90, having lived a full and happy life. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 36 years, John J. Mellett. Anna Mae was the daughter of John and Anna Zurick, of Wilpen, PA. A coal-miner’s daughter, and one of 12 siblings, she graduated from St. Xavier Academy in Latrobe and came to Pittsburgh in the late 40s, working at Child’s Restaurant and then for the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad as a stenographer. She was the secretary to the Director of the Allegheny County Airport for many years. She had four children, Denise Shaffer (James), Richard Watts, Mark Mellett (Julie) and Brian Mellett (Elizabeth Lewis) and eight grandchildren, Shannon Kasprack (Craig), Laura Maloy, Matthew Jackson, Julia Mellett, Evan Mellett, Arielle Watts, Fionnula Mellett and Jack Mellett; and great-grandchild Zachary Brown. Anna Mae was a polka enthusiast, playing the button box in Pittsburgh’s International Button Box Band for about 20 years. She was a committee woman for the Democratic Party in the South Hills for many years. Anna Mae was a member of Nativity Catholic Church and served on the women’s guild. She enjoyed bringing the polka mass to her fellow parishioners. Anna Mae had a devout faith and was a fun-loving person who loved her family and friends dearly. She will be missed very much. Viewing will be Sunday, September 30, 2018, from 12-2 and 4-6 at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15236. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, October 1, 2018, 10 AM, at Nativity Catholic Church, 5811 Curry Road, Pittsburgh, PA, 15236. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Anna Mae’s honor to Elizabeth Seton Center at setoncenter.com/senior-services/senior-center/. Online condolences may be left at www.jeffersonmemorial.biz.
