Anna Mildred Allen's Obituary
Anna Mildred Allen made her grand entry into the world on Valentine's Day February 14, 1926 in Homestead, PA. Anna also called "Mildred" was the 1st daughter and 3rd child born to Waverly & Susie Short. She was one of 9 children, 6 boys & 3 girls. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was an active member of Clark Memorial Baptist Church. Mildred graduated from Homestead High School in 1943 at the age of 17. Mildred married her beloved Warren Hamilton Allen, who was serving in the US Navy, on June 28, 1945. This loving union bore six children, Beverly, Waverly, Warren Jr., Carla, Darlene & David. Mildred and Warren were devoted parents, and prioritized their children's well-being by keeping them actively involved in church, school and other activities.
The summer of 1945 Mildred was working for the Pittsburgh Courier where she won a pin-up girl contest. Her picture went out in that publication across the country.
Mildred was a devoted wife, loving mother and a funny cherished grandmother. Mildred enjoyed sewing... making outfits for her girls. She made afghans and cross-stitched baby blankets for her grands and great grands. She enjoyed playing the piano, hosting family & friends & planting flowers in the summer. After years of being a stay at home mom, when her youngest David started high school she applied for a job at Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh, got hired and loved her job. Mildred's most cherished times were visits from her children & grandchildren. It was always a fun time going home to Mom's. She'd make our favorite foods and we would talk, laugh and eat and later in the evening she'd bring out the snacks and we'd eat some more. When you wake up in the morning at Mom's house, the coffee is brewing, the food smells good and the table is set as she waits for you to come down for breakfast. What she enjoyed and loved most was having her kids home, fixing their favorite foods
THE BEST TIMES! LOTS OF LOVE AND LAUGHTER !
Mildred was an avid reader and news person, a talker and a good debater. She was a member of the Del-Glards Club, who sponsored a benefit each year to raise money for their Scholarship Fund which permitted outstanding district students to further their education.
Mildred and Warren also enjoyed traveling to visit their kids, family members and friends. They traveled to California, Hawaii, Florida, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Washington, D.C., South Carolina, Missouri, Virginia, Wisconsin, Delaware, Maryland and Colorado. Mildred also celebrated her Sister Alzera's 75th birthday on a cruise to the Bahamas. An all girls trip... sisters, nieces, cousins.
This caring, devoted mother leaves to celebrate her life, legacy and humor her children, Beverly West (Bill), Waverly Nesmith (the late Robert Nesmith), Warren Allen Jr. (Donna), Carla O'Connor (Lee), David Allen (Diane). She leaves 10 grandchildren who affectionately call her Grandma, Grams or MawMaw .... Gary Jefferson Jr , Shannen Allen Hawkins, Kelly Jefferson Jackson, Stephen Nesmith, Ashley Allen Lardill, Jonathan & Darren Matthews, Brandon O'Connor, Desiree' Rojas and Devanae Allen. Her grandchildren have blessed her with 16 great-grands and 1 great-great grand. She also leaves to cherish her memories a host of special nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
