Agatha C. Giegerich's Obituary
Agatha C. (Schilling) Giegerich, a beacon of compassion and care in the Pittsburgh community, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2024, at the age of 91. Born on February 19, 1933, in the very city she would dedicate her life to serving, Agatha's gentle spirit and unwavering kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew her. She was the loving wife of the late Paul J. Giegerich.
Mrs. Gigs, as she was known by many, was a devout Catholic and a parishioner at St. Thomas A Becket for 57 years. Agatha devoted 35 years to the noble profession of nursing. Her career was a testament to her loving nature, as she provided comfort and healing to countless individuals at Jefferson Regional Medical Center, Veterans Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital, and Pittsburgh Hospital. Her dedication to her patients was matched only by her commitment to her colleagues and the broader medical community, where she was a cherished member and mentor.
Those who had the privilege of crossing paths with Agatha describe her as the epitome of love, kindness, and gentleness. Her warm smile and soothing presence were a source of solace to many during their most vulnerable moments. Agatha's legacy is not only in the lives she touched through her professional work but also in the example she set of selfless service and genuine care for others.
Agatha is survived by her three children, Martin (Susan) Giegerich, Paul Giegerich, and Marie (Mark) Zarlino; five siblings, Marie “Babe” (Harry) Brooks, Theresa Mueller and her late husband, Andrew “Pete”, Joseph (Sherry) Schilling, Lawrence (Arlene) Schilling, and Dennis (Patricia) Schilling; eight grandchildren, Erin (Tommy) McCafferty, Dan (Cara) Giegerich, Emily Giegerich, Jacob Giegerich, Luke Giegerich, Nicholas Zarlino, Miranda Zarlino, Jessica Zarlino, along with her great grandchildren, Thomas, Mia, Charley, Danny, Dax, Marie, Hudson, and one on the way. In addition to her husband and parents, Agatha is preceded in death by two sons, Kenneth (Patty) Giegerich, and Thomas Giegerich; a daughter, Karen (Jody) Giegerich-Rodgers; and a brother, Harry (Nancy) Reinhart.
As we bid farewell to Agatha, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a heart that generously loved. Her memory will continue to inspire and guide us, reminding us of the profound impact one person can have on the world simply by being loving and kind. Agatha C. Giegerich will be deeply missed, yet her spirit will forever remain a cherished part of the Pittsburgh community she so faithfully served.
A viewing for Agatha will be held 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM on Sunday, May 19, 2024 at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, Inc. 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15236. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM on Monday, May 20, 2024 at St. Thomas a Becket Church, 139 Gill Hall Road, Clairton, PA. The family asks that all who will be attending the Mass meet them at church.
